There are three types of library card available at the Independence Public Library, a Full Service Card, a Basic Service Card and a Youth Service Card.
The Full Service Card is free of charge to those living within the city limits of Independence or within the legal service boundaries (usually city limits) of other CCRLS member libraries. It allows adult users to check out up to 50 items, including 5 videos and 3 CD-ROMs. Youth under the age of 16 must have permission of a parent or guardian to receive a library card. Youth may use their parents' identification for address verification. Full Service Cards for youths allow a maximum number of 25 items on a library card. Parents may choose to give their child permission to check out videos. To receive a card, a child must be able to print their first name.
Residents of other library service areas in Polk, Yamhill, and Marion counties may apply for a library card at the Independence Public Library. Those residing in cities other than Independence will be issued a temporary card, pending acceptance of the application by the user's home library.
The Basic Service Card may be issued to those living in Polk, Yamhill, and Marion counties, but outside of the legal service boundaries of a CCRLS library. This card allows the user to check out one item and place one hold at a time. It is valid at any CCRLS library.
For children under the age of 16 living in the 97351 zip code, but outside of Independence city limits, the Independence Public Library offers a Youth Service Card in addition to their Basic Service Card. This card allows the user to check out 25 items and place 5 holds. It is valid only at the Independence Public Library and may only be used to check out items belonging to the Independence Public Library. It may not be used to check out adult fiction or software.
Those who live outside of Polk, Yamhill and Marion counties may apply
for an out-of-district card.
The current cost for these cards can be found in the Fines and Fees
Policy. Once the annual fee is
paid, out-of-district cardholders receive the same privileges as local
cardholders.
(Adopted July 1, 2000)
It is not possible for library staff to control specific information
children and youth may locate on the Internet because the resources available
are constantly changing. Just as libraries do not vouch for or endorse
the viewpoints of written material in their collections, they do not do
so for electronic
information. Selections policies which serve to govern a library's
purchase of written materials may
not apply to material accessed electronically. It is the responsibility
of the user (or parent, guardian or care-giver) to determine what is appropriate.
Libraries has a responsibility to provide material and information presenting
all points of view in a
wide variety of formats to meet users' informational needs. Not all
sources on the Internet provide
accurate, complete or current information. Therefore, it is the responsibility
of the user to interpret the validity of information found on the
Internet.
(Adopted 3-6-96)
