1:30-2:45 General Keynote Session: Joel ScambrayJoel Scambray, along with Stuart Mclure writes the Security Watch Column each week in InfoWorld Magazine. Their best-selling book, Hacking Exposed, has sold more than 100,000 copies in six months. Scambray is managing principal at security consultant Foundstone ( www.foundstone.com ).

3:15-5:30 Dis-cussing  RPA: Three Indiana Joneses and the Temple of RPA: John Goodyear, Mesa Public Library, AZ; Ed Moeller, DeKalb County Public Library, GA; Don Yarman, Grandview Heights PublicLibrary, Columbus OH; Ed Riding, epixtech, Inc. Join people who have RPA working in describing the travails and thrills of getting RPA software to do what it should. Discussions will include setting up vendor records, multiple library configurations, and how to change the HTML code on the RPA pages to “brand” for your library, as well as how to develop database menus for your patrons.  
The VIP/PC: Access for the Visually Impaired: Michael Schuyler, Kitsap Regional Library, WA. Two years ago Kitsap was awarded a Cybrarian of the Year award from MCI, which included a $30,000 check. We used the money to set up several computers specifically designed for the visually impaired. This is an account of our VIP project including live demo of several pieces of software: JAWS for Windows and ZoomText, at least. Problems, costs, and results will be discussed.  
eBooks and Libraries: One Library’s Perspective: Terri Wilburn, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, NC. This session will present PLCMC’s position in the emerging role of eBooks in the public library setting.

Recall for Multi-Agency Libraries: Steven Orton, epixtech, Inc. Steven presents methods for creating Recall reports for individual agencies.

Webfeat: Integrating Web Page, Dynix, and Database Searching Into a Single Search Engine, Including Patron Authentication: Jed Moffitt and Meg Rheingold, King County Library System, Seattle, WA. Libraries seem to be looking for ways to simplify search access to an increasing variety of databases. KCLS is working with a company called Webfeat to a) search the KCLS web page, the Dynix catalog, and 50 licensed databases all from the first page of the web site; b) display an easily managed summary of results; c) integrate Dynix Holds in the process; d) provide a single point of authentication for the remote patron; e) unify the look of the PAC catalog to both in-library and remote users; and f) provide PAC with a thin client.

Digitizing Local Records: Beth Kroehler, Muncie Public Library, IN. This session will present one library’s experience with digitizing and indexing local court records with access available through the Internet.

PC Reliance on the Bookmobile or the CIRC Desk: Nancy Manheimer, Kitsap Regional Library, WA. This session will discuss using PC Reliance in Expanded Mode on the Bookmobile and in Basic Mode as a backup software on Circulation Desks. We will cover basic features, and the pros and cons of both versions.

Computer Security: Feeling Safe When You Know They’re Out to Get You: Al Carlson, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library, FL; Ben Ostrowsky, Tampa Bay Library Consortium, FL; Eric Sisler, Westminster Public Library, CO. Heightened awareness of the need for security is the emphasis of this session. Useful security tools and options for both large and small libraries will be discussed.

Pulling Rabbits Out of a Hat: The Magic of WebPAC Configuration: Trish Reading, epixtech, Inc.

“Ain’t Got Nothin’ But Holds, Babe, Eight Days a Week”: Brenda Cameron, Fort Vancouver Regional Library, WA. This session will provide an overview of the holds process from the standpoint of a regional public library district. Included will be the technicalities of holds (setting up the routing lists, why items sometimes appears twice on RHA, etc.) and actual experience from FVRL where patrons are allowed unlimited free holds and free shipping of holds.

Diacritics and Dynix: Mairi McFall, Oakland Public Library, CA; Bob Rasmussen, Rasmussen Software; Jim Taylor, epixtech, Inc. As the world becomes increasingly multi-lingual, libraries all over find the need to properly display many languages. For many of us, this means getting the accents to show in PAC or CAT for Windows or in Anzio. For others, this might mean Chinese or Arabic. Come and see what the possibilities are.

Greg and Al’s Dramatic Reading of Guru Sendmail Stories by the Fire in Winter: Greg Barniskis, South Central Library System, Madison, WI; Al Carlson, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library, FL. “Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there was a small village in the woods. The village had a wonderful little library, full of light and wisdom, where all the children would gather to hear stories and all the adults would come to seek out precious knowledge (and to check their email). But the village was surrounded by a deep dark forest, full of thieves and bandits (and I don’t mean no Robin Hoods, though some of these bandits did fancy themselves heroes of sorts)...”

Before You Close The Doors: What the SA Needs to Close a Branch on Dynix: Nancy F. McLees, Dauphin County Library System, PA. Dauphin County discusses the experiences with permanently closing one branch and with temporarily closing another for a physical move: what went right and what could have been done better. Planning charts and much discussion anticipated, come and participate if you have closed a branch or see it looming on your horizon.

Securing Your Neighbors: A Shared Bibliographic Database in a Mixed Consortium: Barbara Glackin, Pittsburg State University, KS. This program will discuss maintenance and training issues in a mixed consortium. The cataloging/technical services topics will include duplicate bib records, authority control, “free” MARC records, training catalogers with a wide variety of expertise, and “where the buck stops”, and the library-wide effects.

Scanning for Success:  Jim Rosaschi, Sonoma County Library, Santa Rosa CA, Ann Tenglund,   St. Bonaventure University, NY. Come hear how two very different libraries use the same   basic processes to achieve different ends. Sonoma County Library has been scanning in historical photographs and making them available through their Dynix catalog. St. Bonaventure University scans articles for its in-house electronic reserves service and adds a link in their Dynix catalog. Identification of materials, scanning, cataloging, linking, and other topics will be discussed, with ample time for sharing of audience members’ questions and experiences.

International Paper: How City of Sydney (Australia) Public Library Uses Horizon: Melissa Smith, City of Sydney Australia Public Library. This session will present a general overview of what the city of Sydney is doing with Horizon CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) and how it works for them.

Have It Your Way: Custom Internet Filtering at the Fort Vancouver Regional Library: Rod Miller, Fort Vancouver Regional Library, WA; Gwen Culp, Timberland Regional Library, Olympia, WA; Jed Moffitt, King County Library, Seattle, WA. This session will discuss how to devise a patron-initiated custom filtering solution for public library internet access computers. Topics will include IOLs (Dynix) and third-party software (i.e. Pharos, Inc.) integration, Proxy Server (MS Proxy Server) and filtering product (WebSense) integration, policy and technical issues, and alternative technologies.

Talking Turkey to a Techie: Coordination and Communication in the Library Systems Office: Susan Johns, Pittsburg State University, KS. This session will look at both sides of the communication between technical guru and librarian, and how to coordinate systems projects in the library. The paper will deal with perspectives, communication techniques, groundwork assumptions, and coordination of projects through the eyes of librarian and techie alike.
